The old Jewish cemetery of Split was established in 1573 on the eastern slopes of the Marjan hill, overlooking the city. It is a 10-15 minutes’ slow walk uphill from the city center. If the gate is locked, the staff of the coffee place Vidilica will open it.
The cemetery offers a unique display of traces of the past. There are over 700 graves, with readable tombstones from the 18th-20th centuries. After the WW2 this cemetery was closed and protected as a cultural monument.
Today the Jewish community of Split uses the Jewish section of the public cemetery at Lovrinac, where there is also a Holocaust memorial.
